Devotions: Proverbs 18

The estranged seek excuses to rebel against sound judgment. Fools want to express their opinions, not achieve understanding. With wickedness comes a contemptuous attitude; with dishonor, disgrace. But words are powerful; wisdom’s fountain is a gushing stream. Don’t favor the wicked; don’t deprive the righteous of justice. Foolish talk brings strife; fools invite punishment. A fool’s mouth ruins him; his lips ensnare him. Gossipers’ morsels penetrate to the core. The slacker is brother to the destroyer. YHWH’s name is a strong tower; the righteous run to Him and are saved. A rich man’s wealth is his protection. Before destruction, a man is haughty, but humility must come before honor. Impulsive responses bring folly and shame. Our spirit can withstand illness, but a broken spirit is unbearable. Intelligence seeks and listens for knowledge. Generosity opens space and creates access to greatness. The first speaker seems persuasive, but the last speaker wins the judgment. Let mighty controversies be settled by casting lots. A brother helped is like a strong citadel; but quarreling is like prison bars. A man is satisfied by the fruit of his speech. The tongue has power to bring death or life; when you speak, consider which outcome you will encourage. Who finds a good wife has found goodness, God’s favor. The poor speak gently; the rich answer roughly. Some pretend to be friends; but there a true friend who sticks closer than a brother.
