Devotions: Proverbs 15
Soft answers turn away wrath; harsh words stir up anger. Wise tongues dispense knowledge; foolish mouths pour out folly. God sees everything; He watches both evil and good. Gentle speech is a tree of life; a perverse tongue breaks the spirit. Fools despise parental instruction, but those who heed admonition are prudent. Much treasure graces the homes of the righteous, while trouble befalls the income of the wicked. Wise lips multiply knowledge; not so foolish minds. A wicked person’s sacrifice is an abomination to God, but He loves those who pursue righteousness. Severe discipline awaits those who forsake God’s way, and whoever hates reproof will die. Death and Destruction lie open before God; how much more open are human hearts! Scoffers hate reproof, so they avoid the wise. Glad hearts produce cheerful faces; heart-sorrow breaks one’s spirit. Understanding people seek knowledge, while fools feed on folly. All the days of the afflicted are evil, but a cheerful heart has a continual feast. Better little with godly fear than great treasure and the trouble it brings. Better a dinner of herbs eaten in love that a fatted ox consumed amid hatred. A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, while one slow to anger quiets contention. A sluggard’s path is overgrown with thorns, while the upright proceed on a level highway. Wise sons make happy fathers; fools bring their mothers sorrow. Folly is joy to the senseless, but people of understanding walk aright. Without counsel, plans fail; with many counselors, plans succeed. Apt answers bring joy; how good is a word in season! The path of the wise leads upward to eternal life, and shuns the depths of Sheol. God tears down the houses of the proud, but He sustains a widow’s property lines. God hates the thoughts of the wicked; the words of the pure please Him. Those greedy for unjust gain bring trouble on their households; but those who hate bribes will live. A righteous mind ponders how to answer, but a wicked mouth spouts forth evil. God is remote from the wicked, but He hears the prayers of the righteous. Eyes focused on goodness rejoice the heart; good news refreshes the bones. Heed wholesome admonition and abide among the wise; to ignore instruction is to despise oneself, but heeding admonition multiplies understanding. To fear God is to gain in wisdom, and humility proceeds honor.
