Devotions: Proverbs 23

When you eat with powerful people, discipline yourself. Be abstemious and modest. Eat little; talk little; listen and observe. Don’t spend yourself striving for wealth; wisdom desists, and wealth flies away like an eagle. Don’t crave the bread of a stingy person—he doesn’t really want to share; his pittance will make you sick; and what you try to share will be wasted. Don’t speak in front of fools; they will despise your wise words. Leave property lines alone, and stay out of an orphan’s estate—God is the Redeemer of these, and He will defeat your cause. Discipline your child; it won’t kill him, but rather you’ll be saving his life from Sheol. A wise son gladdens his father with a good heart and righteous speech. Fear God; don’t envy sinners—trust Him for the future. Avoid drunks and gluttons; they will end in poverty and rags. Listen to your parents. Work for truth, and keep it; search for wisdom, instruction, and understanding. A wise child is his parents’ joy. Pay attention to God; stay away from harlots. Don’t indulge in strong drink—it leads to woe, sorrow, strife, and complaining. It goes down smoothly, but it bites and stings like a poisonous snake. It muddles your mind and ruins your life.
