Devotions: Proverbs 24
Neither envy the evil, nor desire their company—they devise violence and discuss mischief. A lasting dynasty is built by wisdom, established by understanding, furnished and enriched by knowledge. Wisdom and knowledge trump strength; wise counsel shapes victory in war and in business. Wisdom overmatches a fool; he cannot speak in the counsels of the wise. True strength perseveres in days of adversity. Do all you can to save those who are on the path to death and destruction. God knows and judges everyone and everything—so trust and fear and obey Him! Consume honey—it tastes wonderful, and it’s good for your body; likewise, wisdom nourishes the soul; a wise, balanced life produces hope and a future. You need not plot against the wicked; leave their sure destruction in God’s strong hands. Moreover, do not rejoice over the fall of your enemy, lest God find your derision unpleasing, and turn His anger from your enemy. Don’t fret over evildoers or envy the wicked; the evil have no future; God will snuff out their lamps. Fear the Lord and the king, and obey them both, to forestall the ruin and calamity that can suddenly break forth from God and sovereign. Judge impartially; one who wrongly acquits the wicked will be cursed and despised by all people and every nation, while those who rebuke the wicked will have delight and blessing. A right answer is like a gentle kiss. Prepare thoroughly and well before beginning, and when all is ready, finish the project! Don’t be a false witness, nor seek to take revenge. Leave payback in God’s hands. I ponder the field and facilities of the lazy—they are run down, weedy, covered with the dust of neglect. And I realize this: a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—and poverty will come upon you like a robber and want will attack you like an armed brigand.
